AR mTicketing Solution

About the Client

GSP Novi Sad is a leading transportation company in region, focused on improvement of its urban, suburban and intercity transportation services, by a number of long-term preferences. Its aim is to achieve a high quality of our services, so the company together with municipal governing body (City of Novi Sad) took part in MobiWallet project in order to investigate new means of ticket distribution and service improvement.

Client’s Challenge

There were several technological challenges and several legal/financial ones in order to make MobiWallet service work.

In terms of engineering and technological challenges, it was important to make MobiWallet compatible on different technologies and to enable interoperable system to work in parallel with the old one. In terms of payment processing, each project partner has to adhere to EU and local legislations. In addition, business model is affected by service charges by mobile operators and payment providers on top of transport operators.

About Solution

MobiWallet application is the result of joint effort of 15 European project partners from Italy, Great Britain, Spain and Serbia who created a unique platform for a public transportation system that helps citizens have a better quality of transportation experience.

The aim of the MobiWallet EU Project was to demonstrate the mobile payment in public transport utilising the QR code, augmented reality (AR) and optical validation.

The pilot will integrate two means of transport, specifically the busses and rental bikes from the rental bike location as well as the payment system for the two. It will in this way enable the multi-modal transportation.

One of the key value propositions was that this system will create the more sustainable network of public transport as well as efficient route planning for citizens.

Available Services

  • Bus ticket purchase via mobile app supported with different payment channels
  • QR code based ticket validation (AR)
  • Bus arrival times and map with their locations in a real time (AR)
  • A real time information on air pollution (AR)
  • Info on bike rental points

The mobile app created by us was based on Augmented Reality technology, and utilized GPS location and Environmental monitoring data acquired from the devices mounted on public busses. Actually, Augmented Reality front-end enabled dynamic service offering while system co-existed well with current solutions; none/minimum hardware and software modification on operator´s side were required.

The platform allowed users to: register/log in; access the information on different transport modes’ services and added value services through AR interface; validate QR code based tickets and access to QR code based services. The platform could store user´s data and transactions, as well as data from devices which provide additional services. The platform provided basic operations to users and operators to access and manage this information.

Regarding functionalities, a certain level of intra and inter pilot interoperability were needed while simple functional mobile app design co-created utilizing UX feedback.

This meant that mobile payment could be used for different payment channels and ticketing in public transport using the smart phones and technologies based on the QR code, optical validation and augmented reality supported UI.

Multimodal Transport Payment – Bus, Taxi and Parking

The app tackled the complete infrastructure of the city since the multimodal transport (eg. bus + taxi + parking) offered unique, integrated and interoperable means of payment and ticket validation.

Payment for the bus tickets was available by direct carrier billing through the mobile telecom operator as well as by cash vouchers. In collaboration with Taxi Associations, citizens and visitors could pay the taxi ride using virtual wallet, utilizing app credit without using the cash, which makes the entire process much more safer, efficient and smoother.

Users could pay for integrated parking services using SMS within the MobiWallet App as the integrated payment solution for public transportation is also offered.

Rental bike service had no payment functionality due to incompatibility of technologies, but info about rental bike points was available

Key technology needed

QR codes, augmented reality and optical validation fleet management, enviroment monitoring mobile sensors, mobile payment and ticketing.

The app mobile payment system operated based on integration of mobile network operators - DCB (Telecom Srbija), cash vouchers; virtual wallet, sms, payment cards, and Pay Pal. Thanks to these technologies the system could manage user´s credit (e.g. cash vouchers and virtual wallet) and payments as well as all the transfers to different operators according to their needs.

Key benefits for the client

In a direct feedback with users, it became confirmed that they were pleased with the app, design, as well as user interface. Apart from liking the concept of the virtual wallet, the users saw that the extra benefit for them could be if the app becomes operational in the whole city and across any means of transport. For example, one of the remarks was that pay pass option on the mobile devices would save a lot of time and would eliminate significant delays present in public transport.
