There were several technological challenges and several legal/financial ones in order to make the MobiWallet service work.
In terms of engineering and technological challenges, it was important to make MobiWallet compatible with different technologies and to enable an interoperable system to work together with the old one. In terms of payment processing, each project partner had to adhere to EU and local legislation.
In addition, the business model was affected not only by service charges from mobile operators and payment providers, but also by charges from transport operators as well.
The MobiWallet application is the result of a joint effort of 15 European project partners from Italy, Great Britain, Spain and Serbia who created a unique platform for a public transportation system that offered citizens a better quality of transportation.
The aim of the MobiWallet EU Project was to demonstrate mobile payment in public transport that utilizes QR codes, augmented reality (AR), and optical validation.
The pilot integrated two different means of transport, specifically the buses and rental bikes from rental bike locations, as well as a single payment system for both. Multi-modal transportation was enabled in this way.
The mobile app created by us was based on Augmented Reality technology, and utilized GPS location and Environmental monitoring data acquired from the devices mounted on public buses.
Available Services:
- Bus ticket purchase via mobile app supported by different payment channels
- QR-code-based ticket validation (AR)
- Bus arrival times and map with their locations in real time (AR)
- Real-time information on air pollution (AR)
- Info on bike rental points
QR codes, augmented reality and optical validation fleet management, environment monitoring mobile sensors, mobile payment, and ticketing.
The app mobile payment system operates based on the integration of mobile network operators – DCB (Telekom Srbija), cash vouchers, virtual wallets, SMS, payment cards, and PayPal. Thanks to these technologies, the system can manage a user’s credit (e.g. cash vouchers and virtual wallet) and payments, as well as all the transfers to different operators according to their needs.
Direct feedback from the users confirmed that they were pleased with the app, its design, and user interface. Apart from liking the concept of the virtual wallet, the users saw that the extra benefit for them could be if the app becomes operational in the whole city and across any means of transport. For example, one of the remarks was that the pay pass option on the mobile devices would save a lot of time and would eliminate significant delays in public transport.
